Sample Grants
Read brief descriptions of projects funded in recent grant cycles. We hope these summaries will give you a feel for the variety of projects and approaches SARE is receptive to.
Farmer Grants
In 2012, Northeast SARE awarded $395,648 to fund 35 Farmer Grants. Awards ranged from $4,730 to $14,999. These projects allow farmers to explore new ideas that will make their operations more sustainable.
Sustainable Community Grants
In 2012, Northeast SARE awarded $147,224 for ten Sustainable Community projects. Awards ranged from $14,369 to $15,000. These projects promote community revitalization and economic development in the farm community.
Partnership Grants
In 2012, Northeast SARE awarded $300,480 to fund 24 Partnership projects. Awards ranged from $5,696 to $15,000. These projects support farm service professionals who work cooperatively with farmers to explore topics that address farm sustainability.
Graduate Student Grants
In 2011, Northeast SARE awarded $238,275 for 17 Graduate Student Grants. Awards ranged from $9,787 to $15,000. These projects support student research in sustainable agriculture done under the supervision of a faculty advisor.
Professional Development Grants
In 2012, Northeast SARE awarded $492,213 for five Professional Development projects. Awards ranged from $26,699 to$161,960. These projects deliver sustainable agriculture training to farm service professionals who in turn advise farmers on sustainable practices.
Research and Education Grants
In 2012, Northeast SARE awarded about $1.5 million for nine Research and Education projects. Awards ranged from $50,345 to $208,560. Research and Education projects are for ambitious multiyear projects that benefit farmers and improve the sustainability of farms in the region.
Agroecosystems Research Grants
In 2011, Northeast SARE continued funding of one long-term research project for $392,658. This program supports in-depth research into the ecological interactions that are the foundation of sustainable agriculture. We are currently supporting two Agroecosystems projects and will not be seeking new preproposals until further notice.
